Monsanto

About:

Monsanto is a biotechnology company which began in 2002 after it was divested from Pharmacia Corporation. Research and development of products at Monsanto aim to provide farmers with the tools, seeds, and software they need to cultivate food and clothing fiber while preserving the environment. Agricultural biotechnology is the firmly established research focus in an effort to improve farmer livelihoods by increasing their profitability through yield enhancements.

Notable Innovations:

-Roundup Ready Corn 2 provides farmers with significantly better weed control than other corn as well as enhanced plant flexibility which serves to reduce plant damaging. Both effects serve to increase corn yields.

-Bollgard II cotton uses advanced technology to provide enhanced protection from Lepidopterous pests. This technology prevents most leaf- and boll-feeding worm species from damaging bolls, which can impact yield.

-VISTIVE soybeans, developed through conventional breeding, contain less than three percent linolenic acid as compared to the typical eight percent level found in traditional soybeans. The result is a more stable soybean oil, with less need for hydrogenation.
